It depends on the type of battery.
If it is lithium ion -- which most laptop batteries sold in the last 5 years are -- there is no advantage to unplugging it or doing a deep discharge.
The idea that you need to avoid over-charging and re-charging comes from older generation NiCad batteries. These batteries had the type of memory effects people are referring to. But they were phased out and only the oldest laptops are using them any more.
Today's Lithium Ion -- Li-On --- batteries do wear out after a period of year. It makes no difference if you are constantly charged or are recycling them.
