What will you remember most about former President Cory Aquino? Why?

As former President Corazon Aquino continues her ordeal with colon cancer, Pinoys everywhere pray for her and remember the widow of Senator Ninoy Aquino who became the first female President of the Philippines and a world-renowned advocate of democracy and peace.

Since birth, I have been told that she is a good president. When I started to grow up, I started to analyze some facts.
This is just my personal views and no others... Sorry for offending...

1. She brought back 'Democracy' or should I say 'Theocracy' that's why the Muslims felt prejudiced by the Christians. Near active participation of the church and the government.

2. It gave more power to the Manilan 'imperialists', People power was initiated by Manilans that's why they have more power to the government that those of the prejudiced people in the provinces. Marcos' ouster should have been initiated by a plebiscite to give the whole Filipino people the decision.

3. She have merely done nothing on our economy, our GDP growth shrank and budget deficit exploded. She scared foreign investors, barred privatization and deregulation. The new constitution barred foreign investors from owning land, that could have given thousands or even millions of Filipinos jobs (The cha-cha today, I favour this part but not the parliamentary part and term extension). Economic recovery were only have been attained through Ramos' economic reforms.

4. She changed some names of monuments, landmarks, airports and other places. Especially NAIA.

5. Marcos want's Hacienda Luisita's lands for agrarian reform, that's why they hate him. (I'm from Tarlac.)

Regarding Ninoy's death, I think Marcos did not order his assassination because of a simple logic. Why would he let them assassinate Ninoy (with the U.N. watching his landing at NAIA) if he knew that he'll become a hero afterwards and will result to his ouster and possibly his demise??

María Corazón "Cory" Cojuangco Aquino (born January 25, 1933) is a former President of the Philippines and a world-renowned advocate of democracy, peace, women's empowerment, and religious piety. She served as the 11th president of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992. She was the first female president of the Philippines and was Asia's first female president.

other things i know about here is that.............

A self-proclaimed "plain housewife",[2] Aquino is the widow of Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., a leading figure in the political opposition against the autocratic rule of President Ferdinand Marcos. After her husband was assassinated upon his return from exile in the United States on August 21, 1983, Aquino, who had no prior political experience, became a focal point and unifying force of the opposition against Marcos. She was drafted to run against Marcos in the 1986 snap presidential elections. After Marcos was proclaimed the winner despite widespread reports of electoral fraud, Aquino was installed as President by the peaceful 1986 People Power Revolution

President Cory Aquino will always be tagged to the word "democracy". I was so young when people power 1 happened and only read it on history books. It is given that she is a good president. But the thing I remember most about Tita Cory is about her motherhood. She is the icon of democracy and the icon of a best mother. Maybe that's why people love her. During the time her children is in the midst of problem she is always there listening, understanding and forgiving. That is what Filipino people needs: isang ina na susuporta sa kanyang anak patungo sa tagumpay.

Cory will not only be remembered as a the President that brought the Marcos dictatorship down, she will be remembered also as a weak president. When she was a president she was shown to be someone that cowers under her bed with all the coup de tat. Another thing, i will remember her that because of her the population of the Philippines went up significantly which brought more economic misery to our fellow Filipino. I still wish there dying will be better than the dying/death of our great many Filipino who have died because of starvation,mal-treatment,abuses, etc.

a yellow get up..children in all places always mentioning a person with a yellow attire as "cory" or "maka Cory Ka?" and of course her loving daughter Kris who always get her in shame in her unstoppable love affair but i think she's now in low profile attitude now in terms of having a relationship because of course of her hubby James Yap ang Sons. The coup' d' etat rumor about hiding under the table? I don't know if it's true but the person who said it was now dead already..About politic things ..i don't remember anything but for me she is the " Mother of Democracy" and the other one is the " Mother Of Surgery"

She was the greatest president of the Philippines. I am a filipino and she is the best. She went through rough times and had to fight a long battle. She will be forever loved and missed. I am proud to say that I am a filipino. If our country was in danger, she will fight with everything she has. She has made Philippines proud, safe and happy. Even though she wasn't president when i was born, she still protects the Philippines. I will miss her. Everyone in the filipino community should be proud to have a president like her. God bless President Corazon Aquino!

I was already out of the country at the time Cory Aquino became the President of the Philippines. I hope her speedy recovery from her existing ailment. But from my prospective, Cory Aquino was the Philippines version of US's President Obama. Obama got elected because of the dissatisfaction with George Bush. Cory as well became president because of the emotions as the result of her husband's assassination plus Marcos unpopularity. Although Cory Aquino was renowned advocate of democracy and peach, she never did much to help the "common tao". She belonged to the few wealthy and the elite, while many of the nation's poor continued to struggle to survive. It was like that in the past and it will always be like that in the future. BTW the present President GMA has not shown any better.

President Aquino taught us all that the puppet state of an empire can and usually does fall into the hands of the Citizens which is a glory and testament to the will of the good peoples and the truth that makes a Democracy what it is intended to be.
Of the People, By the People and For the People, she exalted those words into the reality that is the intent or was the original idea and truth that they portend to be.
    She is an amazing person.
    And always will be.

I will always remember her (and her husband) as the people who gave the Filipino the best chance to actually do something about the graft and corruption that besets that country.
Many brave Filipino's put their lives in jeopardy when they came out in force to support Aquino and to protest against the corrupt and murderous Marcos regime but it is unfortunate that the Filipino did not embrace this opportunity but chose to squander this once in a lifetime opportunity.
They will probably vote for her daughter (who knows very little about politics) with the hope that she will be able to continue her mother's work.

I am really scared of how this question was phrased.

It really sounds as if she was already dead.

It's as if you don't have fond memories of her, do you?

For myself, I do. In fact, I served under this President. In the Intel community, we were trained to answer "We work at Malacananang, under the Office of the President". Of course, every functionality of government falls under this, but it sounds great. And we were taught to use the phrase only under the most extreme circumstances. Can you actually believe that?

I remember that Cory was a most forgiving person. The Intel community during her tenure was loaded with Marcos leftovers, but they still received salaries, triple that of my own!!!! Darn it all!!!

We all pray for her. We remember the Aquino family's ordeal in the hands of the dictator. Then she was put into the spotlight to run against Marcos where she became a player in the David vs. Goliath matchup. Her ascension to the presidency became a symbolic victory and triumph of good versus evil; her sweet revenge against a perceived dirty hand behind the murder of her husband .

    God bless you, Mrs. Aquino.

that she's more apt to be a president compare to gloria who is 1m40.
she's more presentable of personality and speech compare to gloria!.
she's more humble and not stealer or corrupted, compare to gloria!
she's much better appreciated by filipinos since she don't have record of getting or got rich with the money of filipinos.
she's better welcomed and respected by europeans compare to gloria who is being laugh at and being mocked at her back, because presidential sit is not suitable for her, unlike Cora Aquino

She will be remembered for she ended the Chaos Marcos bought to our country for almost 20 years or more. For me she is the best president and leader Philippines has ever had. She did a lot and contributed a lot to make our country progressive. But look at now our country's economy is going down and we're corrupted because of this useless leaders which did nothing, just for fame and fortune. They can't solve the crisis in our country until now. Hope this 2010 we will have a good leader.

Also let's pray for Cory Aquino's health.
Let's pray for her because she is a good example and icon to everybody.

God Bless You Pres. Aquino! Get well soon.

She was a good peace maker. But the communists were able to manipulate her. Which led to the downturn of the Philippine economy. Still, she was the key to democracy, soon there will be progress in the Philippines. But she didn't give an appeal that much to me. Yellow is cory. YELLOW YELLOW YELLOW. There is also an orchid named after her.

I guess the most remarkable trait about President Cory Aquino that I will always savor is her honesty, integrity and sincerity. People who worked with her in the palace during her presidency could attest to this, based on the "little" acts of honesty that they shared about her. She saw to it that she never spent government funds for her personal needs. This may sound trivial, but who among the presidents, or even high ranking politicians practice this? I am so thankful to God, that at least for once in our lifetime, we were able to experience being ruled by a GENIUNELY HONEST president such as Cory Aquino. If you ask me, now that she's gone, if there will ever be another president who will rule our country with the same integrity and sincerity as Cory's, I think my answer to you is "ONLY IN MY WILDEST DREAMS".

"As I came to power peacefully, so shall I keep it." this was her statement during her good administration where she fought the peace and order of the Philippines that's why Marcos dropped out.

President Corazon Aquino a world-renowned advocate of democracy, peace, women's empowerment, and religious piety. She is also a "Mother of Democracy".

No one can replace her even our present president can't do, what President Corazon Aquino did.

I'll always remember President Cory Aquino as "the light to democracy". She never let the whole FIlipino people down in times of trials and hardships. She stepped-up to go on and show the nation how a good leader does...that't why it's not questionable why many people compare other presidents to the late president for she showed to us the true meaning of leadership, sacrifice, and the strong faith in GOD!

I'll always remember her for freeing us from the Martial law and giving our country the democracy and peace we've always wanted to ever since martial law started, for going down from her presidency without any corruptions, for being such a nice, peace-loving and a calm person and for her color signature yellow.

I'm only a kid and my mom told me that she's not a corrupt person.

I hope Tita Cory is happy wherever she is and I know she's in heaven now.

    We'll miss you Corazon Aquino.

This is my answer. And this is a fact. when Mrs. Aquino became the president of teh Republic of the Philippines, we lived in a miserable life. Out of 24 hours, we only enjoy two (2) hours of electric service from Meralco. The daily brownouts last for 22 hours. I've known so many discrepancies in her administration but most of them are negative, so I might as well just state that one fact.

As far as I can remember about former president Cory Aquino is that she is the reason for us filipinos to have courage to fight for our freedom.Because her husband Ninoy Aquino died during marial law because Ninoy is the one who is brave enough to face Marcus.Ninoy also open the eyes of the filipinos to figth for our democracy.

i think it will be how she managed our country, from a simple mother and wife, she became the president. i think her presidency made the filipino people trust again in the government.and the seven coup attempts! how she surpassed that? who would think a president would still be standing firm after those attempts?and she doesn't even had experience on politics! her faith in god is unwavering, that makes her a strong woman. that really guided her in her every steps

one of Philippines' strongest leader ever.

she's a great leader and known as "the housewife" among the presidents.

working as the 1st female president, she was able to provide good projects and helped many Filipinos.

I'll remember her yellow trade mark and renewal of Democracy!

I think history will not be kind to her even if she was a symbol of change and motherly image. Why, because she gave Meralco for free and allowed incompetent officials to be officer-in-charge during her term.

I was turned off by her position with regards to their Hacienda Luisita.

She is a firm believer of democracy. She has grace under pressure. She cannot be bullied. When she became president, it was a surprise to all of us but she did not disappoint us at all. She did the best that she can. In her own way, she loved the Filipinos.

Cory Aquino fought for her husband, being active since his untimely death. She also brought democracy back to the Philippines. The latest Philippine constitution was created because of her.

Also, Mt. Pinatubo erupted in her term.

She wasted a huge opportunity to really make a big difference in changing the way our government should be run. She was a good mother and a wife. But as a leader, she was merely used by the rich opportunists/relatives who took advantage of her naivete.
