Why do people often blame the poor for their own pitiful plight?

Couldn't a little understanding be given to them? Or, maybe we should make a thorough investigation/study about the reasons why they are at their present state before we judge them for what they are?

Yes, I understand your call.
It does take a heart of Love, patience and understanding to assist the poor. A sincere outreach and desire to make a difference is required.
I always give God the credit for any good deed done to assist the poor.
I never expose any of my charity to gain praise or notoriety. My act is
done out of a pure desire to provide resources to the poor.
Assisting the poor is not a simple task.
There is nothing wrong with recognizing inner problems within the poor community.Giving assistance to the poor with zeal and no knowledge can lead to a discouraging vain feeling. SOME poor people can manipulate and abuse a good program that have positive results.
There are many reasons why the poor are in their own pitful plight.

You don't need a PhD. to assist the poor. If you want to make a difference, be wise in your approach.

Jesus said,"Be wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove."

All answers given deserve a BA for being substantial.

I agree with most comments but it is in Big P's answer that explained carefully why we must understand the poor and help them in ways we can but not to be manipulated by some who are considered "professional beggars".

Thanks everyone.

Because most of the time, they are seen as being too lazy or unmotivated to do anything about their plight...they just beg for pity...no one likes to be begged from, and no one likes people who ask for pity. People respect people who TRY to change their lives. Not those who sit with their hands out.

I witness this phenomenon as well. Really, they just don't understand. They don't understand what it is like to be unavoidably thrown into an unfortunate situation. Because it hasn't happened to them, they assume that they could easily avoid it. They just have no idea. I'm sure there are some people who had plenty of control over their life, but the vast majority of those living hard lives have been put in that position by our greed and profit driven, capitalistic society. Especially our health care system.

I highly recommend the movie SICKO. It depicts just how greedy the protectors of our health care system are. Most Americans have no idea. They accept the system as normal, when it it inhumane and socially unacceptable.

Similarly unfortunate events occur outside of our borders to do the same thing to citizens of other countries. In nearly every unavoidable case, it has probably been because of some form of greed(for money, power, etc.).

The solution: American citizens need to be educated on just what the wealthy people who run our country (not just the congressmen and President) are doing to its people. Capitalism is about a few getting rich, and for what? What we need is a system not centered on ripping people off. Free education, universal health care, etc.

The poor ones need special attention nowadays. Because they multiply speedily (well, is this the right term, as far as polulation explosion is concerned?). The government MUST attend to them by giving them proper education to uplift their lives as well as livelihood projects, medical attention and other kinds of assistance.

Seriously the people who have nothing better things to say about the poor are those that have done nothing. Simply because sympathy and apathy don't go together. Those who quickly lift their fingers and point at others are those who suffers from deficiency of understanding, peace and love. Because a person filled with love, peace and understanding radiant forgiveness and much love. Just like what they say "money begets money".
A person who send help to their poor relatives in the Phils have no business criticizing the Phils simply because it contradicts his/her actions.
While a person busy thinking and reading things about the Phils and yet have done nothing is nothing but an onlooker whereby criticism becomes his/her specialty.
An individual raised by his/her parents as a responsible, loving, helpful and forgiving kind of person have no business criticizing and scandalizing anyone's misfortune. Obviously it's against his/her values.

In other words there are those who are bored with useless ego and have PhD in critical management.

I hope this will help to the person you are aiming for, if you know what I mean....

    Good luck

It is not a generalization of course, but unfortunately, there are really poor people who do not do anything to try to improve their plight, even if they have the means or a better way out.

In fairness, the government, as well as several NGO's, humanitarian groups, religious groups, and a lot others do their share to help, but again, they can only do so much. The poorest dregs of society sprout like mushroom, a proof of rather dismal failure in population control among this group. Such an irony that the poorer they are, the higher is their tendency to produce so many children, adding to their woeful situation. In short, poverty is a problem of the society. Blame could not be pointed to just one group. Of course, those who are mandated to help them must double, nay triple their efforts. A long term solution must be planned and implemented along with the efforts to improve our country's economy. On the forefront of course is the wish of every one for corruption to be eliminated, but I guess this is asking for the moon for now. Not in my lifetime I believe.

yes Absolutely however poverty is a very complicated matter,i think most poor people come from poor families, despair and hopelessness are the main Legacy these families past on to the children, but there are many more factors such as lack of education, selfishness among affluent [HUMANS]and disinterested goverment officials.---the more things change the more they stay the same
