Why do people consider dogs loyal?

i know dogs are branded as the most loyal pet ever but why?i'm just wondering because i cannot get a thought of how they can be "loyal".i mean, other pets would be "loyal" too, right?rabbits, cats, hamsters, you name it. But what separates dogs from a lot of them?

Every single dog I have ever owned would have given it's life for me. I don't doubt this.
I was walking my three dogs one year and some guy came up and attacked me. Instead of running, all three attacked him and chased him off. They probably would have taken him down if I hadn't yelled for them to come back.
I was in an abusive relationship at one point and also had a rescue dog that had been abused by a male, when I was being beaten, this little dog came running out of his kennel, peeing all over himself and still attacked this guy to get him off of me.
When my dogs have seen me in danger or thought I was in danger, they faught tooth and nail to be by my side.

I love cats and I've grown fond of rodents, but I dont' consider them AS loyal as a dog.

Dogs are pack animals and place most of their trust in a leader. Most dogs would die for their master, you can't find that kind of loyalty in people.

In my experience (although I have never owned a rabbit, but I have cats and hamsters), dogs are ecstatic about anything to do with their owners. I can leave for two minutes, and sure my cat will greet me at the door, but will be pretty nonchalant about it. My dog on the other hand, if I am gone 30 seconds, he will be so excited to see me again! As if I was gone for days!!! I think dogs in general are more loyal then other animals, but some other animals have certain ones in the lot that are more loyal then some dogs, if that makes any sense. I am sure there are loyal horses, pigs and cats, but there are probably more loyal dogs in total.

you should read on line about all the dogs who have actually saved their owners lives ...by alerting them to fire and other alarming issues .. my dog would randomly check on my children and nudge them with his nose while they were asleep ... once they moved a lil he would go back to sleep ... that's what loyal is ... they are amazing and some owners just can not tell you how it is you just have to know and feel it

My dog follows me everywhere. He freaks out if I leave his sight. Right now, he is crammed under the computer desk just so he can lay with me.

If I were in danger, I know he would protect me with his life. He has already tried to protect me from a dog attack (even though it was just an over-excited border collie jumping on me, but he didn't know).

Cats and rats a rabbits really can't be "loyal".

The definition of loyal"1: unswerving in allegiance: as a: faithful in allegiance to one's lawful sovereign or government b: faithful to a private person to whom fidelity is due c: faithful to a cause, ideal, custom, institution, or product

Cats and rats and rabbits can love you. They can be described as loving. Good pets. Friends. Companions. But the world loyal just doesn't fit them.

"Unswerving in allegiance". If a big man was attacking me, my cat would probably run away. the rat and the rabbit would just sit there, obliviouse. Neither of these actions are "1: unswerving in allegiance: as a: faithful in allegiance to one's lawful sovereign or government b: faithful to a private person to whom fidelity is due c: faithful to a cause, ideal, custom, institution, or product ". Yet my dog would fight to protect me, probably to his death.

Dogs are loyal because MOST dogs will be there for you, no matter what. Most, but not all. Cats and rabbits and other pets, on the other hand, just wont be there as much as dogs. Thats why I say they are loving companion animals, just not LOYAL companion animals like dogs

Dogs are natural pack animals and they look at their owner as the alpha leader, so they're pretty loyal.

I'm a cat person myself.. and my two kitties love me and are very loyal =] They follow me around the house and greet me when I come home and cry when I leave sometimes.

EDIT: lol I've been reading some answers.. and not all dogs will protect their owner. It all depends on personality. Some dogs scare very easily and hide. My friend's dog is like that and even pees on the carpet when she get scared.

This is because unlike other animals, dogs are so attached to their owners that they don't leave them. Ex. I left my cat at home along with my dog for a day with my friends, when I got back, my dog was excited to see me but my cat just sat there.... Also tend to attach themselves to their owners so much that they risk their lives for their owners, for example those stories of dogs saving their families out of burning buildings...Dogs are great pets

    Hope this helped! =]

If you own a dog, that dog will stay by you no matter how you treat it. You can abuse him and he'll still love you unconditionally. They are usually very protective of you and your home.

If they are that way when you mistreat them, imagine how they are if you really love them. This is why they are labeled the most loyal.

Other pets are not loyal because; Rabbits will run off as soon as they get out of their cage. Cats believe they own you. Hamsters? None of these others will protect you or stay by you no matter how much you love them.

So, get a dog! Have a nice day.

because some dogs regards their owner as master even they weren't feed and hurt physically.
