Why aren't there any international best selling Filipno authors?

Filipinos have been writing literature for ages yet we have yet to produce an Arundhati Roy, Salman Rushdie, or Paulo Coelho; giants who made it big in the literary world. Why is this so?? Is it because the world is simply not interested in the Philippines (Lord I hope not!)? Is it due to the fact that we are not a member of the Commonwealth hence our ineligibility for the Booker Prize? Is there still hope for a Filipino to write about his country and culture and be read by an interested and broad audience?

I found it funny how you thought of the Commonwealth thing being a part of it. But I don't think so. Considering the fact that Philippines has more nurses, engineers, and seamen, it is not surprising to know that there are yet a very diminutive amount of writers in the Philippines compared to other countries. I also don't think that the world is not interested in our country, because surprisingly, we produce a liberal amount of literate students in here. But the thing is, they choose other profession, not writing - which is a sad fact. Interesting question though, I might add.
