Do you have to buy a desktop with a dvi port or can you put one in yourself?

The best way is to purchase and install a graphics card that has at least one DVI connector. By just buying a DVI to VGA connector will not give you what you are probably hoping for, a clearer sharper picture, as the display will still be in analog, not digital. If you plan on running Vista in the future, you will need a DVI HDCP compliant video card to view DVD movies (not to mention an HDCP compliant monitor as well).
