Avoid abrupt discontinuation of any SSRI if possible. Gradual tapering is recommended during discontinuation of any SSRI to decrease or prevent the occurrence of potential withdrawal symptoms. However, fluoxetine (PROZAC) is a long-acting SSRI, and withdrawal symptoms are uncommon due to the long half-life of the drug's active metabolite. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported with abrupt or rapid discontinuation of short-acting SSRIs (e.g., sertraline-ZOLOFT). However, the manufacturer has reported that abrupt withdrawal of fluoxetine has also been associated with adverse CNS effects, including but not limited to dysphoric mood, irritability, agitation, dizziness, paresthesias, and headache.
